Carl Loewen Pinot Blanc '22 0.75L

    Producer: Carl Loewen

A few years ago, the Loewen winery acquired a vineyard in Leiwener Klostergarten which offers an ideal terroir for Pinot Blanc. It has a southwest exposure and the soil consists of deep gray shale. Even in drier periods, this terroir can save enough water.

After a late harvest the Pinot Blanc matures in Moseltypical wood barrels, the so-called Fuder. These barrels give the aroma of the wine a note of new wood. The fermentation lasts three months while it is done with the "sur lie" technique until shortly before bottling. Pinot Blanc shows the typical ease and elegance of the Mosel. The bouquet is defined by the minerality of the slate terroir and the green bean, lemon, pear and quince aromas of the Pinot Blanc. The fruit and elegance of the wine enchant with the power and richness in the background.

The tradition of the winery dates back to the year 1803. Their ancestors bought vines in Maximiner Klosterlay during the time of secularization under Napoleon. To this day the winery has its roots in these vineyards. In 2008 they bought the Carl Schmitt-Wagner winery and with it a real oenological cultural monument.

His vineyard at Maximin Herrenberg was planted in 1896 with ungrafted vines and still remains in its original form. This makes it one of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the world. In a high-quality terroir and with old vines is where the grapes ripen. Loewen tries to make these natural treasures flourish in the winery with only minimal intervention. Their philosophy is oriented towards traditional winemaking, which they interpret in a modern way.
